Grzegorz Jarzyna, Polish director, is opening his first performance in Russia at the Theatre of Nations. The show is based on a play by Witold Gombrowicz Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy; the director has staged this text before, early in his career. Jarzyna sees the story of the main character Yvonne - a young girl of saturnine temper who finds herself amongst the royal family members – through the actual family of the playwright, who indeed uses real people he knew - e.g. from his childhood - as prototypes in his grotesque story. Gombrowicz creates such peculiar characters that the whole play is balancing between comedy and psychological thriller. It is exactly this combination that is the key one for Jarzyna – it allows to reveal all the social and ethical issues that are embedded in the play. GRZEGORZ JARZYNA, theater and film director; graduated from Krakow Drama School where he studied under a legendary director Krystian Lupa. Since 1998 he has been the artistic director of TR Warszawa.
