Building a Kingdom is a series of workshops, through which Anne-Cécile Vandalem connects actors across the world. Working on one performance, they become part of a single story. During her master class Anne-Cécile Vandalem will explain how such communities can be created in a world as diverse as ours, how different people can be connected through their personal histories, and how we can resist globalisation through the creation of common narratives.
Anne-Cécile Vandalem is a Belgian actress, writer and director. She studied at the Royal Conservatory in Liège and in 2008 founded he company Das Fräulein (Kompanie). She presents her work at the biggest stages of Belgium. She likes to mix genres, creating detective stories that grow into tragedies or comedies, or musicals that turn out to be Shakespearean dramas. The tragic yet comic world of her theatre is close to that of film. She likes to speak about politics, tell personal stories and dive deep into imaginary, magical worlds. The first part of her new trilogy devoted to the end of times, TRISTESSES premiered at Festival d'Avignon in 2016, and the second part—Arctic—was shown there two years later.
