ABOUT PERFORMANCE


Viktor Ryzhakov will speak about theatre as an art of communication and a study of reality, discuss the limits of theatre and the search for a ‘new sincerity.’

Viktor Ryzhakov is an actor, theatre director, teacher and writer, Distinguished Artist of Russia and artistic director at Meyerhold Centre. He studied at the Far Eastern State Institute of Arts and Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute, and as a postgraduate student at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts. He worked at Moscow Youth Theatre and from 1995 to 2001 was the art director of Kamchatka Comedy and Drama Theatre. He gives talks and runs master classes in Russia, Germany, Poland, USA and Hungary. In 2012 he started reading a course at Moscow Art Theatre School, whole graduates later formed the independent theatre company JulyEnsemble. He directs productions at Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theater, the State Theatre of Nations, Alexandrinsky Theatre and other theatres in Russia and abroad. He has staged several new drama works and has received several Golden Mask awards, as well as other Russian and international prizes. In 2019 his production Optimistic Tragedy. A Farewell Ball was awarded a Golden Mask for Best Drama Production.
