TRAGEDIA ENDOGONIDIA BR.#04 BRUSSEL

ABOUT PERFORMANCE

In 2002, Romeo Castellucci began a huge project that he called Tragedia Endogonidia (“the tragedy born out of itself”). The project included 11 shows (or stops) in ten different European cities. It opened and closed in the director's hometown of Cesena and went through several European capitals and cultural centers.

The Territory festival brings to Moscow the forth part of this massive fresco, with Brussels as the geographical reference point, and “time” as the main theme. This theme was not abstractly approached, and the director talks about real, biological, physiological age of a person — the mystery of birth, the mastering of various social roles and functions, the person's attempt to take part in the civilization, aging, death, disappearance.

Castellucci rarely directs plays. Generally, the theme of his shows is well thought out stories that he has written himself. “I don't know what will happen next, but I think that the only form that I can accept right now is tragedy. Everything is touched by this spirit. For people born in the West, it's the core of theatre and a most perfect form, a form that awaits its future,” says Castellucci.
