LECTURE BY TIMOFEI KULYABIN

ABOUT PERFORMANCE

In the recent years, more contemporary theatre directors are moving into opera and ballet, previously believed to be the more conservative art forms. One of Russia’s most acclaimed directors Timofey Kulyabin has successfully staged both plays and opera. His works include over 15 dramatic productions on Russian and international stages, as well as five operas, including two productions at Bolshoi and Rigoletto at Opernhaus Wuppertal (Germany). Unafraid of breaking stereotypes, Kulyabin proves that a drama director can bring a new vibrant energy into an opera. During the lecture Timofey Kulyabin will speak about the challenges and opportunities that a drama director can face when working on an opera.

Timofey Kulyabin is one of Russia’s most acclaimed theatre directors, head director at Krasny Fakel Theatre in Novosibirsk. His production of Chekhov’s Three Sisters has received the Jury Award at Golden Mask Awards and taken part in Wiener Festwochen. Kulyabin has collaborated with Russia’s biggest theatres including the Bolshoi, the Novosibirsk Theatre of Opera and Ballet and the State Theatre of Nations as well as theatres abroad such as the Riga Russian Theatre, and has received many theatre awards.
