«There is no sitting sitting in thoughtful contemplation at a Shechter gig. For pure, heart-pounding excitement, there is simply no one to touch him» — Daily Express
From internationally celebrated choreographer Hofesh Shechter, SHOW is a wild and wicked performance composed of three acts: The Entrance, Clowns and Exit – performed by the hottest new talent of Hofesh Shechter Company.
Combining Hofesh’s bold, exhilarating and tribal choreography with a pulsating score, SHOW revolves around a group
of anarchic performers as they play their parts in a macabre circus of comedy, murder and desire.
SHOW offers a bitingly comic vision of a topsy-turvy world where fools can be kings and kings fools, performed in the
company’s unique and unforgettable theatre-dance-rock-gig style.
‘The mighty contemporary choreographer – a combination of dance-maker and rock- star, but with film-director
sensibilities.’ — The Times
Clowns originally debuted to rapturous acclaim at NDT in 2016 and now returns alongside new material by Hofesh Shechter.
Show contains harmless smoke effects and loud music. Due to sound levels in the show, we recommend that you
provide foyer signage signalling loud music in SHOW and make earplugs available to audience prior to the performance.
Clowns Premiere: April 29, 2016 by the Nederlands Dans Theater 1 in The Hague, The Netherlands.
SHOW is produced by Hofesh Shechter Company in association with HOME Manchester and Lyric Hammersmith, and received production support from Fondazione I Teatri Reggio Emilia and a production residency at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, Brighton.
Hofesh Shechter Company is supported using public funding through Arts Council England.
Hofesh Shechter Company benefits from the support of BNP Paribas Foundation for the development of its projects.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
A boundary-breaking dance company that produces exceptional work created by Hofesh Shechter, with at our core a
diverse tribe of extraordinary international dancers.
Based in the UK, but playing on major stages throughout the world, our work celebrates and inspires the freedom of the human spirit.
We believe that dance has the ability to prod and poke and tap into our deepest emotions; a visceral part of ourselves that we rarely access in modern life.
We dance to know what it feels like, not just to live, but to be alive. In all our work, we strive to move ourselves, and
our audiences, beyond reason.
Founded in 2008, our repertoire includes Uprising (2006), In your rooms (2007), The Art of Not Looking Back (2009),
Political Mother (2010), Political Mother: The Choreographer’s Cut (2011), Sun (2013), barbarians (2015) and Grand
Finale (2017). We have played in cities around the world including Paris, New York, Melbourne, Tokyo, Berlin, Tel
Aviv, Rome, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro and many more.
2018 will see the continuing international tour of Grand Finale; a revival of Hofesh’s production of Gluck’s Orphée et
Eurydice at La Scala, Milan, co-directed with John Fulljames; a UK and international tour of SHOW performed by our
apprentice company, Shechter II; and the conclusion of our three year talent development project East Wall, which
culminates in a large-scale spectacle of dance and live music at the Tower of London, in partnership with East London
Dance, Historic Royal Palaces and LIFT.
Hofesh Shechter is recognised as one of the most exciting artists working today, renowned for composing atmospheric musical scores to compliment the unique physicality of his movement. He is Artistic Director of the UK-based Hofesh
Shechter Company, formed in 2008. The company are resident at Brighton Dome and Shechter is an Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells.
His recent works for his company include Uprising, In your rooms, The Art of Not Looking Back, Survivor (in
collaboration with Antony Gormley at the Barbican), Sun, Political Mother, and, in 2015, barbarians.
Shechter has also staged and choreographed works on leading international dance companies including the Royal Ballet, Netherlands Dance Theatre 1, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Bern Ballet, Carte Blanche Dance Company, Candoco and Batsheva Ensemble.
He has choreographed for theatre, television and opera, notably at the Metropolitan Opera (New York) for Nico Mulhy’s
Two Boys, the Royal Court on Motortown and The Arsonists, the National Theatre of Saint Joan and for the Channel 4
series Skins. As part of #HOFEST, a 4 week festival celebrating Shechter’s work across 4 iconic London venues, he co-directed Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice with John Fulljames at the Royal Opera House. In 2016 he was Tony Award
nominated for his choreography for the Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof.
Shechter’s latest full evening of work his company, Grand Finale, premiered at La Villette with Théâtre de la Ville
(Paris) on 14 June 2017. Grand Finale was nominated for Best New Dance Production at the 2018 Olivier Awards.
