LECTURE BY SERGIO MORABITO

ABOUT PERFORMANCE

Sergio Morabito will speak about Così fan tutte, an opera by Mozart that has had a very interesting stage history. The final work in the trilogy of Mozart’s collaborations with Lorenzo Da Ponte was initially criticised for a weak libretto. However, the situation changed in the 20th century: there were discovered new meanings and a complex structure. Even today, its staging might prove to be a challenging task. Discussing particular scenes in detail, Sergio Morabito will show video excerpts from two very different productions: his own in collaboration with Jossi Wieler originally staged at Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam in 2006 — and Kirill Serebrennikov’s, which premiered at Opernhaus Zürich in November 2018.

On the 18th of October, Sergio Morabito will be joined by Kirill Serebrennikov, who will share his ideas on Così fan tutte and comment on his production.

Sergio Morabito is a German opera director and writer of Italian descent. He staged his first works at Frankfurt Opera, then he worked at Stuttgart State Opera from 1993 to 2006. In Stuttgart, he worked with Jossi Wieler and staged Don Carlos, Alcina and The Coronation of Poppaea among other works. In 2005 he was invited to Novaya Opera in Moscow to stage Bellini’s Norma, which he had previously presented in Stuttgart (and which the German magazine Opernwelt described as the event of the year). Morabito has received many awards and prizes. In 2011 he became the chief dramaturg at Stuttgart State Opera. He has published many articles on directing opera.
