Stephane Braunschweig was born in 1964. After studying philosophy in Paris, he joined the Drama School of the Théâtre National de Chaillot directed by Antoine Vitez. Braunschweig started his career in 1988 when founded his own company - the Théâtre-Machine. He has made performances based on the texts by: Aeschylus, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Moliere, Kleist, Büchner, Ibsen, Chekhov, Wedekind, Pirandello, Brecht, Khorvat, Hanokh Levin, Olivier Py and Arne Lugre.
S. Braunschweig was director of the Centre Dramatique National Orléans - Loiret-Centre from 1993 to 1998. Later he was head of the Théâtre National de Strasbourg and its National Drama School (2000-2008). Since 2010 Stéphane Braunschweig has been the Artistic Director at the Théâtre National La Colline. He has staged A Doll’s House, Rosmersholm and The Wild Duck, by H. Ibsen; Lulu, by F. Wedekind, Six Characters in Search of an Author, by L. Pirandello;Happy Days, by S. Beckett; I Disappeare,Days Beneath and Nothing of Me, by Arne Lugre.
S. Braunschweig has also been successful in the opera, directing at the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Opéra Comique and Theatre des Champs-Elysees (Paris), at La Scala (Milan) and Staatsoper (Berlin) etc. He worked on the music by Fenelon, Bartok, Beethoven, Dazzi, Janacek, Verdi, Mozart, Strauss, Berg, Wagner, Debussy and Schreker.
Apart from making theatre performances and opera productions – the total number of which is by now coming close to being 60 - Stephane Braunschweig has also published a book: Petites portes grands paysages – a collection of monologues and conversations about theatre. He has also translated from German, Italian and Norwegian plays by Büchner, Kleist, Brecht, Pirandello and Lugre.
